Low AMH does not mean no chance of pregnancy. An AMH result can feel like a verdict on your fertility. But understanding what this test actually measures matters. Anti-Müllerian hormone is produced by cells surrounding small developing follicles in your ovaries. It gives us information about ovarian reserve and helps predict how your ovaries may respond to stimulation during IVF or egg freezing. It is not an exact count of every egg remaining, and it does not directly measure egg quality. This distinction matters because the number of eggs a clinic might collect during IVF is a different question from whether you can conceive naturally. A low AMH may indicate fewer eggs available during a stimulated cycle. On its own, it cannot tell us that natural pregnancy is impossible or that IVF is automatically your next step. A high AMH does not guarantee better fertility either. It can occur with PCOS and may indicate a greater response to ovarian stimulation. Your result needs to be interpreted alongside your age, menstrual history, antral follicle count, how long you’ve been trying and other fertility factors, including sperm health. AMH can also vary between measurements, and hormonal contraception can suppress it. An increase on a repeat test does not necessarily mean you have gained eggs or improved egg quality. The goal is to understand what the result means for your decisions, rather than simply chase a higher number. If your AMH is low, seek individualised advice about your pregnancy goals and timing, particularly if you’re considering delaying conception. At Nourishing Apothecary, our fertility team supports preconception health and helps you understand your results alongside your GP or fertility specialist. Book a consultation or start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call. Consultations are available at our Liverpool clinic in Sydney and Australia wide via Zoom. www.nourishingapothecary.com #AMH #LowAMH #OvarianReserve #FertilityTesting #PreconceptionCare
