We looked at the tomato plants and started asking a very simple question: “What can 1,000 well-managed plants actually produce?” From what we observed, about 90% of the trusses were carrying fruits with an average fruit load of roughly 1kg per truss. Now, assuming each plant produces 10-13 trusses, that is roughly 10 - 13kg per plant… Sounds sweet, abi? 😅 But this is where the Nigerian farmer’s real story begins. Because the money you calculate on paper is not necessarily the money that enters your account. The farmer still has to buy fertilizers and pesticides; pay for labour, power and water. Also, pest and diseases don’t check your budget before attacking the crop. Anything can happen during production. Some fruits won’t meet market standards. Some will get damaged. After spending all that money to produce the tomatoes, you still have to find someone willing to buy them at a profitable price. Greenhouse farming can give you impressive yields, but it comes with its own problems. Good agronomy gets you production. Good management protects that production.
