It was never confirmed... But Kyoshi in the end of the novel actually did met a fox who led her into meeting Yangchen for the first time. And the same fox helped her get back home. And plus, if we'll consider, Pengpeng can pass as her companion. After Kelsang died, she took eover Pengpeng and became the bison's new companion.
