Sets of 3 are still highly effective, but probably won't provide a maximum growth stimulus per set. They also aren't ideal for novices who are still working on their technique. I recommend a minimum target of 5 reps per set to most people. That way, if you fall short, you'll usually still get at least 4. If you only get 3 reps here and there, that's fine. Just don't make it the goal. As for rest periods, waiting 10 minutes won't hurt your gains, but you also shouldn't need that long to recover. If you're taking that long you're probably just getting distracted in between sets without realizing it. Anywhere from about 2.5 to 5 minutes is a solid range on most sets if you're pushing very close to failure. P.S.
