Just two years later, she was starring in *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid* — where a young Sam Elliott found himself completely captivated by her. There was just one problem: Katharine was the leading lady, while Sam was little more than a background extra. "My wife, Katharine Ross, and I both worked on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but I didn't dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene," Elliott told AARP The Magazine. Instead, he watched her from the sidelines. "It was a great opportunity, though, because being an extra on the show... allowed me to get in and watch 'em make the film. I spent a lot of time over in a dark corner watching Katharine and the rest of 'em work," he later told The Oklahoman. Then, 10 years later, fate brought them together again. In 1978, Sam and Katharine found themselves working on *The Legacy* in London. This time, things were very different. Sam was so smitten that he even flew to London for the movie's premiere. "Probably all that and more. We were working together and one thing led to another. And here we are," Katharine later said. They married in 1984 and welcomed their daughter, Cleo, just months later. More than four decades later, their love story is still going strong. "I think really what it boils down to is we love each other, and we work at it. And I think more importantly than anything, it takes wanting to be married," Sam explained. From a young extra watching his future wife from a dark corner to a marriage lasting more than 40 years, their love story took the long way around — but it was worth the wait. ❤️❤️
