Interesting you are using an example that actually wouldn’t be something that is taxed. It’s only stocks, bonds and crypto and most regular day to day people would never be affected

they do this in the USA already with property taxes (Missouri is a great example, you pay on cars and trailers, etc, every year, even if you bought it years ago)

So that model should last about one fiscal year, when all the assets of non rich, but well enough cash poor, people start flooding the market, and the rich buy it up for pennies, but they can do both that AND pay their unrealized gain tax, and the gap grows wider. Until the middle/lower owns nothing. And is happy..

This is why Europe has never been in the race of the Tech revolution from the advent of PC’s to Smartphones to AI now. Europe is old architecture and bicycles. The only players in the big economy are the US & Asia, with Asia gaining every year.

calculating and enforcing unrealized capital gains is an absolute impossibility. it would be people making up numbers out of thin air.

I really like the part where they keep saying the government is “losing” billions. The government isn’t “losing” anything. It’s just not taking from the people who are creating. “Losing” denotes and ownership to which the government does not possess. If we want to start winning these arguments, we need to start correcting the language.

What’s happening in Europe? The Netherlands is considering taxing investment gains before investors have even sold their assets. Meanwhile, governments spend billions on public services, including migrant accommodation and support. Before introducing additional taxes, shouldn’t governments provide a complete accounting of where taxpayers’ money is going, how much their immigration policies cost and whether existing spending is sustainable? And what happens when investors are taxed on profits they haven’t actually received? These are questions taxpayers deserve answers to before governments introduce additional financial burdens.

This is dated information. The Netherlands has moved away from this idea of unrealized capital gains tax because there was push back.
