Even their bending isn't as strong. They lost the majority of written history so no bending scrolls to help teach. Punching a tornado is crazy work and the old air benders would cry seeing it lol.

We even see this in legend of Korra. Bending styles and techniques were way more detailed and complicated during Aang‘s time. During Korra‘s time, bending seemed way simpler with uncomplicated moves and minimal technique

I'm actually glad the world experienced an apocalypse. This way, the rapid technology ceased which I think was the worst part of the Korra show. Aang's time felt magical, nature-al, and just felt like it was part of real history. I love the direction this new series went. I just hope the animation improves in the next seasons.

Honestly what makes me sad IS how realistic each new avatar story is, that no matter how much the former avatar sacrificed and fought to fix what’s broken, humanity will always break it again. It gets harder to fix every time because the more pieces break, the more inevitable it is that some pieces will simply get lost.

America has so many historical documents written in cursive that some Americans would not be able to read now because cursive went the way of the dinosaurs. Our alphabet is more or less the exact same, but the style of writing has been modernized. It's the same thing with these symbols. Heck, company logos have been simplifying left and right too. This is not the animators getting lazy, this is something that we see happening all the time in the real world translated into Avatar

Not to mention this isn’t the first time it’s happened. In the movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender we saw during Avatar Sonom’s lifetime the symbols were different as well

Apparently some of the fandom doesn’t recognize this type of genocide (death of cultures, religions and communities) if it’s not at the same level as the Air Nation complete extinction. Some fans who saw the movie quickly doubled down that Katara doesn’t understand loss or genocide despite the loss and harm the South Water Tribe went through due to the war and the transformation and changes in order to survive post war.

This isn't even the first time showing this. Air Nomad arrows before Aang were far more detailed. LoK and the new Aang movie are consistent in showing this. Aang's arrow itself show the change/loss of culture.

Also aren’t all benders automatically put into the military now? Bc the redesign makes sense if it’s being designed by an authoritarian government bc of course they wouldn’t want their soldiers to realize they had a culture before being drafted

They’re also only on the select few characters in that city, meaning they’re symbols belonging to that organisation, not culture as a whole. We don’t know what happened to the rest of them yet
