A few years after it was released in theaters, Ghostbusters became my obsession as a six-year-old. That might have been around the age when I first watched it at home. Believe it or not, the movie terrified me at first. Even as a comedy, Ghostbusters has some genuinely scary and creepy moments. I remember not being able to watch the final sequence because Gozer freaked me out. Then it became my favorite film. Most of the comedy and deadpan humor went over my head, but it didn’t matter. There was something about the world of Ghostbusters that completely captured my imagination. The characters, the jaw-dropping special effects, the setting, my hometown of New York City. But what I loved and connected with the most was the story of these down-and-out scientists rallying together to start a paranormal extermination business and become successful at it. That was at the core of what drew me in. They were heroes in my eyes. Director Ivan Reitman was able to blend the different tones the film offers brilliantly. It’s something that I feel has never been recreated quite like this again. The cast is amazing. Bill Murray steals the show, and Sigourney Weaver is magnificent and shows her range as a performer. The film was a box office phenomenon, and the main theme song by the brilliant Ray Parker Jr. shot up to number one. For me, it ignited decades of obsession with the accompanying Saturday morning cartoon, toys, comic books, and everything else Ghostbusters. Whenever I watch it today, I’m astonished by how well the movie still works. You can see there was a special kind of magic in bringing together all the elements that make it work so well. Who are you gonna call? Dir. Ivan Reitman, Columbia Pictures, 1984 Aspect Ratio: 2.39 : 1, 35mm (anamorphic) Edit by @siteb_studios #ghostbusters #80scomedy
