instead of weighing against his intellectual achievements,Youre just judging him on your subjective notion of how "terrible" he was.its anachronistic. fact is newton discovered calculas before leibnitz did, but leibnitz's though his notation and method was more elegant,i think both were insanely smart,but newton had a larger scope.he basically interpreted and formulatwd newtonian mechanics all by himself,on top of working on light and chromatics,he developed many other tools like method of polygons or method of finding roots
