Thomas M. Rice, born on August 15, 1921, in Coronado, California, served valiently in the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division, specifically in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. Five years ago, in 2019, during the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Mr. Rice, then 97 years old returned to Normandy to recreate his historic jump. He leapt once more in honor of the memory of his comrades and the monumental sacrifices of that historic day. On D-Day, June 6th 1944, he and the other brave soldiers of the Airborne Division were tasked with landing in enemy territory to capture strategic locations in support of the beach invasion. Video footage credit: First Coast News During the perilous drop, the pilot of Rice’s C-47 had sped up to 165 mph, in order to evade enemy fire, well above the safe drop speed of 105 mph. This caused Rice to land far from his intended drop zone in Normandy. He eventually regrouped with his regiment, using passwords and-noise clickers to identify each other in the darkness of night. Despite being injured from the drop, Rice fought for 336 days and served courageously in the Battle of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he continued his commitment to service by becoming an educator, and teaching social studies for 44 years. In 2022, Mr. Rice peacefully passed away at the age of 101. Mr. Rice and all who served on D-Day demonstrated unparalleled bravery and heroism. Their unwavering courage and sacrifice turned the tide of World War II, paving the way for the liberation of occupied territories and the eventual victory of The Allies.
