@corybooker: Love and kindness. Grace and decency. Every day, ordinary people show extraordinary spirit, stepping up to help someone in need. This is who we are. There are those invested in keeping us divided, at each other’s throats, living in a constant state of anger, outrage, and anxiety. And yet, all around us, often unseen by our media and algorithms, people are doing good. Persistently. Quietly. Without fanfare or expectation of reward. They see a stranger in need and become a neighbor. This is the spirit that has carried humanity through our hardest times. It is the spirit that sustained our ancestors through struggle and suffering. And it is the spirit that will triumph again and again. May we see it. May we live it. May we pass it on.

When I was in college, a woman was walking around lost on my walk home, she started following me, I asked if she needed help, she only spoke Punjabi, but showed me a phone number on paper that was in her pocket. I called the number and her daughter explained her mom had dementia, she put papers with her number in all of her clothes in case she got out of their home. She gave me the address to their home. I walked with her and got her home, she gave me apple juice while we waited for someone to come home. I never saw her again, but have always thought of that moment and how a piece of paper with a phone number made a big difference.

My parents live in the middle of nowhere they’re about 18 miles from town. And about 20 years ago, there was a lady with dementia who was driving her car and she ended up at my parents house. My parents at the time were volunteer firefighters. They helped the lady out she was from Sacramento, which is two hours north. She had been missing for 12 hours.

What a smart man to be able to show his bracelet to that kind lady ❤️as much as I want to give her all the credit I’m going to have to give it him first, he understood he was lost and knew he needed help and gestured again towards his bracelet.. that is a lot of steps for a person with dementia!
