This is one of the mistakes I see most often when reviewing research proposals. Students find information about their topic and then repeat the same information in the introduction, background and problem statement. Each section has a different purpose. Think about it like telling a story… The introduction introduces the reader to your topic. It gives them a general understanding of what you are studying and sets the direction for the research. The background gives context. You explain what is already happening, what previous studies have found, how the issue has developed, and why the topic is important in its broader setting. The problem statement is where you narrow everything down. You identify the specific gap, concern, contradiction, unresolved issue or problem that your study is going to address. You are essentially answering…What is wrong or missing that justifies this research?”
