We tried couples counseling and my therapist said “She’s waiting for you to ‘get it’ and he’s waiting for you to ‘get over it.’” Basically a stalemate. It was the first time a therapist took me aside and said “It’s not you. You’re not crazy.” I got out after 10 years. Never looked back.

Took me a year to leave (getting a job, place to live etc) and during that year I didn’t say anything that wasn’t essential. Didn’t tell him about my day, ask him about groceries, ask him to come to the kids events. Just answered direct questions with one or two words. Just grey rocked that whole year. When I left he said “but this last year we’ve been the happiest we’ve ever been”. It was the best validation of my feelings ever. He didn’t want me or our family, he wanted a silent maid/cook/warm place
