Metro Vancouver is home to millions of people, but it rarely feels like one single city. Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, New Westminster, Coquitlam and the surrounding communities all have completely different personalities. Before deciding whether Vancouver is right for you, here are a few things to keep in mind… Don’t move here blindly. Visit first, explore different neighbourhoods and try to experience the city like a local, not a tourist. Vancouver takes time to understand. The best neighbourhood for you might not be the most famous one or the first place you see online. If your preferred area feels too expensive, look just outside it. Can’t make Kitsilano work? Consider Fairview or Mount Pleasant. Priced out of Downtown? Look at Lower Lonsdale or New Westminster. You can pay a serious premium for a neighbourhood name. Prepare for housing sticker shock. Renting and buying are expensive, and desirable homes can still attract strong competition. That said, your lifestyle, commute and type of home can change dramatically from one neighbourhood to the next. Vancouver is a world class city, but it isn’t compact like New York or London. Mountains, bridges, water and traffic can make two places that look close on a map feel much farther apart. The stereotype is true. You can ski in the morning, walk the seawall in the afternoon and have dinner by the ocean that night. Neighbourhoods feel like completely different cities. Kitsilano, Yaletown, Commercial Drive, Mount Pleasant, Richmond and North Vancouver all offer very different lifestyles within a relatively small region. Downtown Vancouver isn’t the entire Vancouver experience. Some people want high rise living and nightlife. Others are happier near trails, beaches, breweries or quieter residential streets. Don’t believe everything you read online. Vancouver gets criticized for being expensive, rainy and difficult to meet people in. Some of that is fair, but there is much more to the city than the complaints you see on forums. Vancouver isn’t perfect, but for the right person, it’s very hard to beat. Agree or disagree?
