this show did something very few do and showed realistically that you can be a loving and present parent and do what you truly think is best for your kid and still profoundly traumatize them. and they dont cancel each other out, and its hard to reconcile

This show did a great job of showing that neglect (and arguably emotional abuse) is not always something parents do to their kids intentionally. Your intentions can be pure, but, if you haven’t worked through your own issues, you can still traumatize your kids. Two things can be true at once — Lois and Hal both loved and failed Francis as their child.

Him crashing out over the apology not fixing things is what I’m going through. It’s an earth shattering feeling, I thought it would help. It didn’t. And now I’m no contact with my dad. I just can’t get over it and I can’t pretend to and that’s what he needs.

Hearing them finally apologize is the biggest heartbreak, cause he’s right. You expect it to make you feel better, you expect it to be a certain way and when it finally is it feels… wrong. It doesn’t bring you comfort, it doesn’t even bring you sadness. It just makes you feel empty, knowing the one thing you thought could fix you didn’t. That you’re stuck feeling this way no matter how much they apologize.

Every son’s storyline in this show is so unbelievably well written. They get a little saccharine and exposition heavy, but man they nailed the emotions and the realness of family love

His resentment and mission to rebel against her became his identity. It gave him a direction and goal to reach but He never really grew his own personality apart from that. Her apology wasn't fulfilling because without her, he didn't have anything or anywhere to aim.

it was heavily implied that lois had bad untreated postpartum depression after having francis. i love this show bc it had the courage to write their characters realistically, and ppl can debate if lois was a good or bad mom or not but most ppl aren’t just good or bad

One of the best written things about this show is Hal and Lois aren’t awful or malicious people, they genuinely tried their best with the boys it’s just sometimes their best simply wasn’t good enough

I realized I matured in life when I rewatched this and started agreeing with Lois at almost every point… Im gonna cry because I was the Francis in the fam without the warrants. It was so hard to accept help without the concern of being manipulated because while I wanted to be better I still wanted to be me. 🥹
