I think wait-time issues are highly variable in the US. I live in San Francisco where wait-times aren't bad. The longest wait I've had was for physical therapy which took a month to get my first appointment. I could have been seen earlier had I been willing to travel across town.

Let alone the six month wait for your prior authorization for meds or testing to get denied, fought over, and finally (hopefully) approved after you’ve already waited to see a doctor

Diagnosed with depression from my on-campus health center at age 20. Told ”we can’t manage this for you, you need to find a clinician and a therapist in the community”. By some stroke of luck found a therapist in two weeks. Struggled without a psychiatrist for another month (on meds, having side effects, no positive effects, health center declined to treat) before going to an ED and lying about not being safe to be alone in order to access urgently needed medication management. Left with medical trauma from medical neglect (ombudsman got involved, it was a whole thing). In the 6 weeks I called about 45 psychiatrists in my area (Boston) and no one could get me in in under 6 months. I’d been prescribed a sub-therapeutic dose of an antidepressant by the health center and sent on my way. And I had *very* good insurance at the time. Absolute horror show.

I work phones in Gastro. We are at about 7 months for a new patient and 4/5 months for established patient. We can scope in 6 weeks. Part of that is payment metrics. The doctors and the hospital make more from doing routine screenings rather than office visits. We book every day as full as possible, but we have 1-4 spots a day of no shows or reschedules too late to get someone in.

new patient wait times are insane for adults I have waited close to a year for some I am still waiting for a dentist cause I need my wisdom teeth out. thankful for my disabled son's care team who get him into specialists within a couple months when he needs a new one.

Yes! I had a random case of autoimmune uveitis and my ophthalmologist treated me for about 6 months until I could get seen by my rheumatologist

I have to book my annual 9-12 months out. Most others take 3-6 months as a new patient if they are even taking new patients on. Anyone who says that if we were on national healthcare, we would have to wait a long time is just spreading BS propaganda.

I've waited 6 or 7 months for a new PCP. The only reason I needed to swap was because I got a new job, and my former doctor became out-of-network.

The wait times for a sleep specialist in my area is 6-8 months. It’s so long that my SIL got pregnant and had to wait until after she gave birth to schedule again, making her delay 19 months. I live in the largest city in the state, albeit not one of the two with med schools. My grandparents drove an hour and a half every month to my city to see their rheumatologist for a year before they could get on the same doc’s schedule near their house (there’s a satellite clinic in their city where the doctors swap off going for 3 days once a month).

It’s a 9 month wait to see my PCP. Dermatologists in my area aren’t taking new patients. I haven’t had a mole check since 2019. And I live in suburban New England. It’s got to be worse in other places.

yep. we not only pay more today but a year wait for new primary doctor well visit. tried to make a cardiologist appt for my mom and it was 6 months away. Dermatologist or gyno? 8 months.

It took me a little over a year to get in with an endocrinologist for thyroid issues. My mother in law has not even been able to find a nephrologist taking new patients.

Dermatology in my area takes a year to get an appointment as a new patient. A second appointment takes at least 4 months at minimum to get. I'm in a city too.

... no wait times?! It's been a year since I left the US. When I left, Medicare cataract surgery was a year long wait. My pulmonologist's new patient wait times were over a year. My PCP left and as an established patient it was 18 months to see an MD, six months for an NP. I had a PE and was told to see Hematology within three months - they scheduled me eight months out. I gave up on getting an AuDHD assessment because it was not available. Mind, I lived in an area with three separate hospital systems, two of them teaching hospitals. We moved to Switzerland. I haven't checked on cataract surgery here, but an MD for primary care? They apologized that they couldn't get me in until a week later. Pulm saw me within a month of getting that referral. Hematology saw me three weeks after the referral. The AuDHD? I asked five weeks ago. My appointment is on Monday and it's fully covered by insurance.

I was on a 3 year wait list for a geneticist to figure out exactly what is wrong with my connective tissue. Insurance changed, I lost my spot on that list. Now I'm on another multi-year wait.
