@bangkok.discovery: Bangkok has been flooded these past few days — and even “Taxi Boat” has made an appearance 🛶 Ever wondered why Bangkok floods so easily whenever it rains, while traffic jams seem to happen every single day? They’re actually connected to the same underlying issue 👀 * Many of Bangkok’s former canals were eventually turned into roads * Rice fields and other natural areas that could absorb rainwater have been covered with concrete * The city is also sinking by around 1–2 cm every year, partly due to groundwater extraction * So even with various flood-management measures in place, once the canals are full, there’s simply nowhere for all the water to go * Many Bangkok roads were built along former canal routes, which is one reason why some sois don’t connect directly to each other * So why not simply connect the land between the sois? Much of that land is privately owned, and many landowners are unwilling to give it up — which is why you’ll find so many dead-end sois around Bangkok ⚠️ If you’re in Bangkok: Before heading out, use Claude AI to check which areas are currently flooded: https://claude.ai/artifact/N6umcENfSgoY6GMkhVKwZs 🚓 Tourist Police 1155｜🚑 Emergency Medical Services 1669｜🆘 Disaster Relief 1784｜🏙️ Bangkok Metropolitan Administration 1555 When possible, take the BTS or MRT and avoid road-based transportation during heavy flooding.
