@preamnairblog: The Legal Eagles of Hale Street: How the Seenivasagam Brothers Built Ipoh's Political Empire Long before they shook the rafters of the Malayan Parliament, the story of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) began inside a stately pre-war shophouse at No. 7 Hale Street (now Jalan Tun Sambanthan), overlooking the bustling Ipoh Town Padang. This was the domain of S. Seenivasagam & Sons, a respected legal practice founded by their fathera brilliant Ceylonese Tamil lawyer who had migrated from Jaffna. Following in his footsteps, two of his sons, S.P. Seenivasagam and D.R. Seenivasagam, packed their bags for London to train as barristers at the prestigious Inns of Court. When the brothers returned to Malaya, they didn’t just practice law; they became courtroom legends. During the turbulent years of the Malayan Emergency, they took on high-profile, high-stakes criminal defense cases that terrified the establishment. Most famously, D.R. Seenivasagam stepped up to defend Lee Meng—a young woman accused by the British colonial authorities of active militant communist operations. Fearless in the courtroom, the brothers earned the fierce loyalty and adoration of the working-class masses, petty traders, hawkers, and miners across the Kinta Valley. Realizing that courtroom victories alone weren't enough to fight for the marginalized, the brothers made a leap into the political arena. In 1953, they teamed up to found the Perak Progressive Party (later renamed the People's Progressive Party, or PPP). Operating out of Ipoh, they transformed the city into an unshakeable opposition stronghold. With D.R. serving as the fiery orator in Parliament and S.P. managing the grassroots and local council strategies, the PPP swept municipal elections. Under their leadership, Ipoh experienced a golden era during the tin boom years, eventually becoming the first town in independent Malaya to be elevated to official municipal status in 1962. From fierce defense attorneys to formidable parliamentary watchdogs, the Seenivasagam brothers wrote a gripping chapter of Malayan history, cementing a legacy that remains woven into the very streets of Ipoh.
