@a__gongju: This 13th–14th-century bowl from Cyprus is a good reminder that decorative medieval art was not confined to churches, palaces, or aristocratic collections. It was made using sgraffito, a technique in which the design was scratched through a pale surface layer before the vessel was glazed. Here, the decoration shows a dancing woman holding castanets, giving the bowl a lively, secular subject rather than a religious one. Glazed pottery like this could be owned by ordinary or moderately prosperous households. It was more refined than the cheapest coarse domestic wares, but it was still part of everyday material culture rather than elite treasure. People could actually eat, serve food, and decorate their homes with objects that were colorful, humorous, and visually expressive. #medieval #cyprus #archeology #History #arthistory
