Vasco da Gama · Lisbon – Malindi – Chaul – Dabul – Goa – Cochin · 9 April – 24 December 1524 In 1524, Vasco da Gama died at Cochin, on the Malabar coast of India. He had first reached India by sea 26 years earlier. In February 1524 King João III named him viceroy, the king's governor in India, only the second man to hold the title. Portugal had held Goa since 1510. Its officers in India were accused of corruption, and Gama was sent to put that right. He left Lisbon on 9 April 1524 with 14 ships and about 3,000 men. His flagship was the carrack Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai. Several ships were lost on the way out. One of them, the São Jorge under Dom Fernando de Monroy, sank on a reef off Malindi. A wreck found there in 2013 may be hers. The fleet reached Chaul on 5 September. Off Dabul an undersea earthquake shook the ships and a sailor jumped overboard. According to the chronicler Gaspar Correia, Gama told his men the sea trembled for fear of them. At Goa he took charge as viceroy. He sailed on to Cochin. There he fell ill. Correia describes hard boils on the back of his neck that left him unable to turn his head. He died at 3 in the morning on 24 December 1524 and was buried in the Franciscan church at Cochin. Henrique de Meneses succeeded him as governor. Why it matters: Gama's death ended the reform he was sent to make after less than 4 months. His body was taken to Vidigueira in Portugal in 1539. Since 1880 his tomb has been in the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. #vascodagama #History #maps #kochi #onthisday
