The new Lachit Borphukan Maidam development project at Hollongapar near Teok in Jorhat in India’s Northeast state of Assam, transforms the general's original 1672 burial ground into a sprawling 16.5-acre cultural heritage complex. The centerpiece of this state-of-the-art memorial is the "Statue of Valour," a majestic 125-foot bronze monument crafted by renowned sculptor Ram V. Sutar, featuring an 84-foot statue of Borphukan atop a 41-foot pedestal. The complex also features traditional Ahom-style architecture housing a comprehensive history museum, a 500-capacity auditorium, and manicured gardens designed to honor the 600-year Ahom legacy for a global audience. Lachit Borphukan was a legendary 17th-century military commander of the Ahom Kingdom in present-day Assam, India, celebrated for his tactical brilliance and defense of the region. His crowning achievement was leading the Ahom forces to a decisive victory against the vastly superior Mughal Empire at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. Despite being severely ill during the height of the conflict, his refusal to retreat inspired his soldiers to repel the Mughal fleet, successfully halting their expansion into Northeast India. The Tai Ahoms are an ethnic community of Assam, descended from Tai people who migrated from the China-Myanmar border region into the Brahmaputra Valley in 1228 under King Sukaphaa. Over nearly six centuries of continuous rule, they built a powerful, unified kingdom by integrating various indigenous cultures into a shared regional identity. They were highly regarded for their sophisticated administrative structures, wet-rice cultivation, and robust military strategies, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy that includes maidams the sacred, vaulted earthen mound burial tombs reserved for their royalty and elite nobility.
