It starts by listing SEO techniques people use. Then gets into how the patent prevents those techniques. 1. You put out a new page or make a change to an existing one. 2. Google looks at the starting rank of your page (position one, position two, position three, et cetera). 3. Google determines a new rank for your page based on the changes that you made. 4. Google throws a wrench into your plans. “Select rank transition function for document.” This means introducing volatility, so it's hard to guess what your rank should be after you made your changes. 5. Google determines your new rank based on this volatility. 6. Your new rankings go live, Google observes your behavior. 7. So if you freak out because you didn't get the rank you thought you would get from Google, Google sees you make lots of changes because things aren't working like you thought they would work. Then they determine you are a spammer. Your volatility could last for 70 days. It's important to note this patent is expired, but anybody who does SEO knows Google still uses it.
