@storycorps: In the 1950s, teachers at Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez’s elementary school were determined to anglicize the names of their Mexican American students. But one name stumped them all. #HispanicHeritageMonth
My Grandfather went to school named Crescenzio and came home Theodore. Now we have 3 generations of Teddys and not even one Chris.

so what's the big deal that's just the English version of those names you can't expect people of different nationalities to pronounce all the different vocals and intonations of other languages

my grandfather's name was Juan and people called him John, which is how my father got HIS name, but his younger sister got Juanita. 🤷

I'm in my 40s now and have looked up the kids I knew in elementary school whose names had been westernized and I'm so happy when I find them and they're now going by their real name as an adult. makes me sad that their identity was taken from them during their childhood, though. 😔

I remember this kid telling our teacher his name was "Beto" sounded like Beth-o. She said "Ooh I don't like that. I'm calling you Bert." She was black.

Had a friend named Zdravko in middle school who every teacher tried doing this with. He said sure as long as he got to call the teacher whatever he wanted. Zdravko wasn’t called in a lot 😭

This is somewhat normal when people with names that have phonetic pronunciations in one language live in an area where pronunciations are different.

Why do people not know how to pronounce names or words based on the letters it has? Do people just not know how certain sound combinations work?
