I believe some scammers call your telephone number and ask you to phone a genuine company (eg bank) telephone number to confirm their identity. If you phone back on the same line that they have rung you on, they are holding your line open so although you think you have rung a genuine number, you get straight back to them.

Proving you are who you are is going to become impossible going forward with fake audio/video and images. How are banks and financial companies going to legitimately identify people going forward? Especially for opening new accounts/taking out loans etc?

Simms can be cloned and redirected by anyone with access to the phone backbone system. That's one of the reasons SMS is no longer considered secure for 2fa. Call back on a secure cannel, like Signal. Not the phone.
