As someone who buys show heifers I would suggest having your barn open for multiple weeks prior to your sale to allow people more time to look if you don’t already. I also think starting out selling private treaty on a FCFS basis would be best. If you would be open to transitioning from a sale. I think doing in person sales are hard when you’re not super established in the industry. Additionally there are so many show cattle groups on Facebook that you could post promoting your calves. I think selling in September is optimal since open shows start in October (at least here in Indiana).

yesterday was a busy sale day for Michigan with the 5 Star Cattle Sale in St Johns michigan going on. maybe try a different weekend? or join the Michigan Club Calf Tour over labor day weekend?? you guys have great stock, you just need more foot traffic

I’ve sold calves in the mid Michigan livestock Facebook group.. lots of people with lots of interest. The buyers are always an hour or more away. Might be a good group to advertise something like this in!

SC and SteerBidder are the online platforms I look at and buy off of. The FCFS with a set purchase price and posting online on Facebook in the groups is a direction too. We also know plenty of people who do pasture sales with bids due at dusk on a certain day then you would text/call the bidders to see if they want to still be in on the animal. Making it available to an online platform is important. mid-end of September is good.

It definitely takes time to get your name out there. Ive got two great heifers I’m trying to market but no one wants to take a chance on a green heifer. Plus with someone who is just getting the quality they worked for it’s hard. If I can’t get these two gone then I’ve got some good breeding pieces to improve my herd.

You could eventually go on SCOnline but you have to pay and get video and photography also sales are really popular in early to mid September.

He looks tired. It’s a lot of work and it’s gonna be tough the first few years. Good cattle with honesty and integrity behind them will take you a long ways. Keep plugging away and keep the faith and it will all work out in the end.
