How to keep student desks clean: 1. Set EXPLICIT expectations- I show my students a picture of what a clean desk looks like. We talk about the photo and why it’s important to be clean and organized. I also show them a non-example (a picture of a messy desk) & we also discuss it. 2. Praise- when I see a clean desk, I praise praise praise! It doesn’t always need to be a physical reward. Students thrive off of positive verbal praise in the classroom! 3. Reteach- Notice things are getting messy? Reteach those desk expectations! Go over pictures and state exactly what you expect! Have them organize and clean those desks while you teach them (and use this time to praise). 4. Common terminology- I use the saying “don’t let your papers fly in your desk!” Meaning, all papers have a place. We use a unfinished work folder and a red homework folder. I will say, “Please put this paper in your unfinished work folder. Do not let them fly in your desk.” And the students know exactly what I mean and expect of them. 5. Desk Checks- Randomly, I do desk checks! Those with a clean desk will get a small piece of candy or praise! 6. End of the Day- I walk around and view each desk. I give out praise and sometimes a small prize to the best table. 7. Occasional desk fairy- the desk fairy comes and gives BIG prizes!
