The original World Trade Center contained hidden mechanical floors that were essential to keeping the Twin Towers operating. Backup systems and emergency infrastructure were also incorporated into the buildings’ complex network. Pumps and related equipment helped move water through the buildings, while drainage systems carried wastewater downward. Fire protection systems also required reliable water supplies and carefully maintained equipment throughout the towers. Their presence helped divide the enormous towers into functional zones while remaining visually integrated into the overall architectural design.
