قوم ثمود كذّبوا نبيهم صالحًا عليه السلام، وقالوا: أبشرًا منا واحدًا نتبعه؟ فطلبوا آية، فجاءتهم الناقة آيةً من الله، وأُمروا ألا يمسّوها بسوء. لكنهم استكبروا وعقروا الناقة، وكذّبوا صالحًا عليه السلام، وقالوا: ائتنا بما تعدنا إن كنت من المرسلين. فجاءهم عذاب الله بصيحةٍ واحدة، فأصبحوا كهشيم المحتظر (الشجر اليابس الهالك). قال تعالى: ﴿إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَكَانُوا كَهَشِيمِ الْمُحْتَظِرِ﴾
