In a harrowing case of child abuse and murder, Shanda Vander Ark, a 44-year-old woman from Norton Shores, Michigan, was convicted for the starvation death of her 15-year-old son, Timothy Ferguson, who had autism and was speech- and motor-impaired. Timothy weighed only 69 pounds at the time of his death on July 6, 2022. The abuse included hot sauce ingestion, ice baths, sleep deprivation, and food deprivation. At her sentencing on January 23, 2024, Vander Ark was sentenced to life in prison without parole for first-degree murder and an additional 50 to 100 years for first-degree child abuse. Judge Matthew Kacel described the actions as “systematic torture,” emphasizing the severity of the crime. Her son, Paul Ferguson, also participated in the abuse, leading to his conviction for first-degree child abuse and a sentence of 30 to 100 years in prison. Another brother, Nolan Ferguson, testified against their mother, stating, “If I can’t have my brother back, she shouldn’t have her freedom back.”
