@tranquilstreamsmusic: The calmest piece in the piano repertoire is named after a Spartan festival. Gymnopedie comes from gymnopaedia, an annual event held in ancient Sparta and nowhere else. Dancing, choral singing, and war dances. Where Satie picked the word up is still argued about. He said Flaubert's novel Salammbo. Others note that when the first Gymnopedie was printed in a magazine in summer 1888, it ran alongside a poem by a friend that uses the word. What nobody argues about is that the music has nothing to do with Sparta. No war dance anywhere in it. He took a word that sounded good and put it on the quietest thing he ever wrote. Our latest video is Debussy and Satie, five calm pieces.
