Those of you who know me know that I never met a trickling, cascading mountain stream that I didn't like. Well, here's another one. This is Alarka Creek on the trail back to Alarka Falls. You'll find this one listed under #BrysonCity NC, even though it's a good 15 miles from that town. Looking at a map, it's probably closer to Dillsboro or Cowee, both north of Franklin. But it would be a long drive from either place. The hike to Alarka Falls starts out fairly easy. About a half-mile to start. Not a lot of elevation change; a little muddy and a handful of blowdowns. All manageable. But as you get closer to the waterfall, it gets very steep and rocky. The closer you get, the steeper and rockier the climb becomes. I got close enough to see it. But I was unable to see or photograph it effectively. So I'm going with one of the waterfall's lower cascades. It's a very tall, beautiful #waterfall. But it's not particularly friendly. Not a soul around and no cell signal. You'd have to do something really crazy to die here. But a sprained ankle isn't too far-fetched. I may go back and try it again in the winter after the leaves are down. But I would not do it during freezing weather because most of the rocks are wet. Ice would not be your friend here. Bottom line: This one requires effort and determination to get to. A wild hair where the sun don't shine would also be helpful. #NorthCarolina #Hiking #Outdoors
