Sounds like "dollars spent per student" is a bad metric then

This just shows the dangers of a per capita argument. per capita does not automatically become the best way to judge the effect of a statistic

The PTA aspect is so under-considered. Our elementary school PTO budget (we literally can’t afford the “A”; that’s not a joke, the “A” in PTA comes with a fee from the national organization) is $3000. 2 miles away the public school that is much richer and much whiter has a PTA budget of $50,000.

I would also argue it’s a willful misunderstanding, helpful in advancing a particular narrative

don’t forget about how much schools need to compensate for lack of resources at home by providing calculators, pencils etc that wealthy families are able to just buy for their Student to take to School without a second thought

My daughter goes to a “gifted and talented” nyc public school and the ask from the PTA is a donation of $1,800 per student and…most people pay it

PTA / the wealth of the parent population is a huge factor. My child’s elementary school’s PTA fully funds putting a para professional in every classroom K-5.

Also? If you look closely at the “budget at a glance,” you’ll see that that $44k/student also includes the teachers’ pension and benefits payments, usually to the tune of a third of the total number allotted. So while they may be necessary and important, it is NOT a part of what is spent to educate a child. Some schools require more pieces to their puzzle to educate a child, but ALL of the pieces require their appropriate benefits. It makes the smallest schools insanely expensive to operate and they can’t even do everything families are looking for.

Thank you for this context. I just listened to part of the podcast conversation between the author and her daughter and I feel bad for the daughter. Some of the advantages she listed of her daughter being at the school is they “created pancake breakfasts for honors students”. She really did not impact that school in a meaningful way and her daughter said she felt like the dumb kid when she went to a better highschool. :( sad

Do lower preforming schools also have an issue with parents not prioritizing their children's education as much?

Also, idk how it works in NY, but in New Jersey, certain students qualify for free lunch, based on income in relation to family size, so a school district consisting of more families below the poverty line has a significant added expense vs a school district in an affluent neighborhood, where the students either are paying for lunch or bringing from home

Also when a school district can drop 3 million dollars on a new building, that’s not going to be reflected in the per-student, per-year cost but all the money they save by not being in a 60-year-old building will be.

This perfectly encapsulates why equality is not the same as equity, underprivileged, low income, special needs, students are going to require more funding to have an equitable education. Maybe if we just funded schools based on the needs and not on test scores

what do you mean you had to look for a graphing calculator? at my rural (mostly white) school we were required to supply our own. the fact that they were available means you were better funded than us

Thanks for the context. But it sounds like beyond hiring the teachers and keeping the lights on- funding has no impact on the quality of teachers. Better funded schools are able to have more extracurriculars and more advanced classes but in terms of core learning- there is no effect.
