Expect nothing, appreciate everything. Simply said, but not so easily done. It’s a guiding principle in my life, and one I still fail at regularly. Expectations sneak into almost everything. How people should treat us. How our work should turn out. How quickly something should grow. How our children, partners, friends or even life itself should respond to what we give. And I’ve noticed that a lot of my frustration doesn’t actually come from what happened. It comes from the distance between what happened and what I thought should have happened. I don’t think the answer is to stop caring or wanting things. I have dreams. I’m ambitious. I put a lot of energy into the things and people I love. But I’m learning to care deeply about the process without trying to control exactly how it unfolds. To give because I want to give. To love without constantly measuring what comes back. To work hard without believing life owes me a certain result. To enjoy what is here before asking what’s next. And when something beautiful does come my way, to not treat it as something I was entitled to receive. Expect nothing. Appreciate everything. Still learning this one.
