i get your overall point because black people do get called “whitewashed” just for being smart, growing up differently, liking certain things, etc. but you don’t beat a stereotype by proving you’re the exception, you challenge the stereotype itself. a black boy can dress d-boy, make honor roll, golf, and take college classes too! and the interview point you said in another comment doesn’t really make sense because obviously people dress according to the occasion. not wearing something to an interview doesn’t make that style “unpresentable.” you can defend your blackness without distancing yourself from another type of black person.

our image of “black excellence” is so disoriented. I don’t dress nearly as professional as he does (except for formal events of course), and i have a vernacular out of this world, head of the choir at my church, top of my English and Science classes, and I’m enrolled in college courses as a high-schooler. Black excellence doesn’t mimic white stereotypes and we have got to get that out of our minds.
