Many years ago, I was riding my Appaloosa along a Dyke and he spooked and slid down into a drainage ditch… Similarly stuck in the mud. I managed to get four or five adults, and in our case we were fortunate, he was still wearing his saddle so we were able to unbuckle the girth on one side, tire rope to it, and get a rope under his rib cage. Didn’t have a halter only a bridal so unfortunately, the other rope went around his neck and then the five people were able to haul him sideways and that was onto up and onto firm ground. I have to say things do not look very bright for this horse. he’s in deep, exhausted, potentially very cold, and there isn’t firm ground around. I hope they’re able to get back with more people and find a way to get a rope more firmly around his body.
