PIA entered the jet age with the Boeing 707 in 1960. In 1962, a PIA Boeing 720B set a remarkable speed record on the London–Karachi route. The flight took only 6 hours, 43 minutes and 51 seconds. Its average speed was approximately 938.8 km/h. The historic flight was commanded by Captain Abdullah Baig. Captain Taimur Baig was also part of the flight crew. The record flight became one of the most famous achievements in PIA history. In 1964, PIA became the first airline from a non-communist country to operate flights to China. PIA connected Karachi with China through its early international services. PIA also expanded its network to Europe, the Middle East and North America. During the 1960s, PIA became known internationally for its modern fleet and operations. PIA was among the early airlines to operate the Boeing 777 on long-haul routes. In 2005, a PIA Boeing 777-200LR made a historic long-distance demonstration flight. The flight operated between Hong Kong and London. The journey lasted around 22 hours, making it a notable long-haul aviation achievement. PIA played an important role in developing international air connections for Pakistan. Its 1962 London–Karachi speed record remains one of its most celebrated historical achievements.
