It’s funny cos I think most of them are pretending to believe. . . ❤️

fear of Hell is 90% of why they convince themselves to abandon logic and "believe" in god.

I tried so hard to believe in god I tried my whole life and I just stopped trying and life was suddenly better

It is not a choice. I believe in god. I do not like god, I do not worship god, but I believe in him. I’ve tried to stop, I use the logic that he isn’t real, but I do not know how else I can reset my brain. So fully agree with you.

It would break them to admit that you’re right in this situation

Hell is beyond belief. Constant eternal torment is not imaginable. Punishment for simple unbelief doesn't make sense.

Since my mum died I’ve found myself understanding why people are religious. Because the grief would be a lot easier to deal with if I believed I would get to see her again some day. But unfortunately I don’t believe. And I can’t believe just because it would be easier.

I have family members that think this way about me. They believe my atheism is just anger at god 🙄

My mom found out I'm an atheist and she insists that I "turned away from Christ." I've explained no one chooses to lose their faith, but her brain can't register that.

They hate their ways being confronted because it requires them to use critical thinking

I’m directly quoting the Bible to someone on a different post and they’re acting like the verses I provided don’t say exactly what they say. Like I thought God’s word was supposedly to be directly read and perfect?

Counter with asking them to choose to not believe in Jesus. It’s ok because they’ll be able to choose to switch back to believing.

if the concept of god was real he would prove it, and the debate would be about obedience or living a good life not belief/if he is real.

Sometimes I fall into the fantasyland trap of believing I can reach these people by slowly guiding them through examples of not being able to choose to believe something. Like, turn an empty cup upside down and put it on a table. Now, CHOOSE to believe there's a fairy under there. I'm gonna give you 30 seconds, and then I'm gonna pick up the cup. If you still don't believe in her by the time I reveal her, she's going to put a curse on you that turns your hands and feet into forks and spoons. Try real hard!
But it won't work. It will never work. They are unreachable. They are irritrievable. There is something missing. Something way deeper than 'critical thinking.' And you know what, I'll admit it: something is missing from my brain too! I'm missing the special magic that allows me to sympathize or empathize with these irretrievable people or see them as anything but a lost cause. I just. Don't have it. Sorry.

I went from being someone who could not understand not believing in god (double negative) to someone who doesn't understand how I was so convinced that he existed. I didn't make a choice to not believe. in fact it was painful to go from one to the other, but I know I didn't choose. it just happened (after reading the bible properly). So no, it was not a choice.

For all the Christians here (this is a genuine question)… if you can choose to make yourself believe/ have faith… can you make yourself believe in a separate religion just as easily?
