As a parent of an autistic child: take the blocks away. Yes, my son struggles and don’t learn like others do. But that don’t mean he gets a pass. My son was like this, harming kids, adults, and himself so much. But firm and consistent boundaries, paired with proper supports and knowledge, has allowed him to learn how to ask for or accept help when he does struggle.

I’m sorry but “he has autism so everyone duck” had me cackling.

I am the mother to an autistic child and discipline is very important, and naughty behavior is not to be tolerated.

It sounds like the parent is not providing him with a safe environment. And that will just get worse.

Raising an autistic child, we don’t allow behaviors that are harmful. We allow stims. We allow regulation. But if it hurts anyone, including ourselves - the line is drawn and the item is taken. I think you did the right thing.

“Teach the child in a way they understand.” That is something I wish was beat into my aunt’s head as well as other relatives when it came to my cousin (whos now an adult who thinks he can use his autism as an excuse for his horrific actions and behaviors)

“You’re not raising an autistic child” but he’s in my daycare 8-12 hours a day five days a week 🤦♀️I’m not saying we do all the raising but be for real. We pull a lot of the weight and give a lot of love ❤️

Just because he has autism, doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be consequences if he throws blocks, there should be in order to keep other kids safe in the classroom as well

Just because a child is autistic does not always mean that they can not understand, and if they can not, it is our job as the care provider (whether it’s a parent, a para, daucare staff, etc), we take the steps to ensure not only the child’s safety but also others. Take away the immediate danger and redirect. Redirection can also look different dependent on the child. You do not just ignore and let the child

Having a child with autism doesn’t mean you stop parenting them, the parenting just looks different. Sometimes you have to remove items if they become dangerous. I agree if he needs to throw things, you can redirect him to a safe item and environment where he can throw.

Autistic people here, you did right by removing the object that was hurting others. I would recommend getting some soft objects and finding a corner for him to use to regulate himself if throwing objects helps

My son threw his TV remote, he lost his TV. He hit me with his guitar, his guitar went in the trash. He throws toys at me, they get taken away. See how this works? We do not reward negative behaviors.

as my mother used to tell me ( I am an autistic adult) : you have a right to your feelings you do not have the right to hurt someone else or break things you cannot replace

They know and they are deliberately pushing the limits. I grew up autistic and around many children with all different levels of needs. they know. they ABSOLUTELY abuse it when they know you'll make excuses and let them

I LOVE THIS AND THANK YOU!! My son is autistic but we definitely do not just "let him" do these negative behaviors because he is frustrated

and I'm saying this from someone who had a special needs son he has passed away now but I was a special needs Mom and I still consider myself as one. this is what is wrong with parents today just because your son has special needs or child does not mean they cannot learn behavior they have special needs not special privileges

i’m a teacher, and i have one student (first grade) who has a lot of behavioral issues in my class every day. he refuses to put his toys in his backpack, he refuses to stay seated during activities and supper time, he never asks before getting up and disappearing across the room, he spends his time intentionally scaring the other children by jumping at them and yelling or barking, he calls the other kids names, he colors on tables intentionally, and he has tried to punch, slap, kick, and tackle other students. i told his mom that his behavior is regularly taking my attention away from the other students and sometimes even putting them in danger. she looked at me dead in my face and said “well, he has adhd.” i just stared at her 😭 because half of my students are neurodivergent, most of whom have adhd. NONE of my other students have any of these issues.

glad you did this and stood on it. in HS there was a kid in my class, one day he lashed out and started throwing all his things at the teacher, she called security and they removed him from the classroom.
Even if they learn differently that doesn't mean they get to hurt people who did nothing. Teach them to communicate what they need.

My son is Autistic and he absolutely struggles with throwing things, if its a ball then we remind him that its only an outside activity and we can roll the balls in the house, if he throws it again we take it away. ANYTHING else that he throws gets taken and put in a bin for the rest of the day and he knows that. just because he is autistic doesnt mean he doesnt have consequences

anything that has become a weapon is immediately removed. The blocks can come back tomorrow but if they are weaponised again? gone again. rinse and repeat

Omg the solution isn’t “he has autism everybody duck.” 🤣 Going to use this with my undiagnosed very, very autistic father. Bc, I’m sick of “ducking” the fits.
