This is an offset intersection in San Jose, CA, and it's a great example of how complex and high-risk these designs can be in #TransportationEngineering. Because of the proximity to other intersections, a traditional straight-through alignment wasn’t feasible here. Offset intersections are among the most dangerous and confusing types of #IntersectionDesign. There are many possible configurations, but this one used #ChannelizingIslands and delineator posts to restrict unsafe turn movements. Specifically, people making a right turn can't immediately cut across to make a left onto the next street—this would have required crossing multiple lanes of traffic and risked #SideswipeCrashes. Instead, they consolidated movement at a single #TrafficSignal, simplifying the geometry and reducing conflict points. Now, only vehicles continuing straight can make a left, while others are guided safely by the islands. This also enabled clear #Crosswalks on both sides of the signal, improving safety and visibility for #Pedestrians. They didn’t force a direct angled connection between the roads because of nearby signal spacing and operational constraints. By limiting turning movements and simplifying decisions, this #SanJose design greatly improves #TrafficSafety and intersection legibility. Every offset intersection is unique—there’s no one-size-fits-all. That’s what makes them one of the most challenging and satisfying puzzles in #CivilEngineering and #UrbanPlanning. #MrBarricade #OffsetIntersection #StreetDesign #SignalDesign #CompleteStreets #RoadwaySafety #VisionZero #ActiveTransportation #Micromobility #SafeStreets #DesignMatters #TrafficControl #PedestrianSafety #BikeInfrastructure #SanJoseCA #EngineeringSolutions #StreetSmarts
