@maia_shops: At the edge of Antarctica, the frozen continent can suddenly end in enormous cliffs of ice stretching for hundreds of miles. From the ocean, they can look almost unnatural—like a gigantic frozen wall separating the rest of the world from whatever lies beyond. And behind it? Not another ocean. Beyond Antarctica’s ice shelves lies an entire continent buried beneath kilometers of ice: hidden mountain ranges, deep valleys, enormous canyons, and hundreds of lakes sealed beneath the ice sheet. Some of those landscapes haven’t been exposed to the open atmosphere for millions of years. Scientists have mapped much of what lies beneath using radar and satellites, but Antarctica remains one of the most inaccessible environments on Earth. And that has inevitably inspired a darker question: If an entire landscape can remain buried beneath the ice for millions of years… what else could still be down there? #fyp
