🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA’S GROCERY AFFORDABILITY CRISIS The latest Household Affordability Index from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group shows a basic monthly food basket for a low-income family of seven now costs R5,488, up 2% on a year ago. Prices were tracked across seven areas, from Mtubatuba at R5,232 to Springbok at R5,891. Feeding a child a basic nutritious diet costs R970 a month, yet the Child Support Grant, which 12.59 million children receive, is only R580. That is R390 short every month for every child, and the grant sits 33% below the official food poverty line of R868. For a family of four, it gets harder. A parent working full-time on minimum wage earns R5,078 a month. After transport and electricity, R1,799 is left, while a basic nutritious basket costs R3,807. Even if every cent went to food, that works out to about R450 per person, 48% below the food poverty line. That basket is also not nutritionally complete. A properly nutritious basket for a family of seven costs R6,655, which is R1,167 more than the R5,488 basket families try to buy each month. The staples bought first now cost R2,947, or 54% of the basket. Onions are up 66% over the year and 14% in a month, potatoes are up 34% over the year, and bananas rose 19% in a month. VAT alone adds R349 to the basket, more than the R294 it costs for a month’s 30kg of maize meal. With the repo rate raised to 7.25% in September and continued pressure on fuel prices, relief may not come soon. #SouthAfrica #CostOfLiving #Food #Inflation
