What if the forces we recognize in nature are also reflected within us? In Baba Ifa Karade’s The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts, certain Òrìṣà are given physical correspondences within the human body. Ọya is connected with breath and the lungs. Ọ̀ṣun with circulation, digestion and reproductive energy. Ògún with strength, the heart, kidneys, tendons and sinews. And that is only part of it. The idea is deeper than “this Òrìṣà controls this organ.” It is about understanding how divine forces, nature, the body and spiritual balance can mirror one another. Within this system, if an area is struggling, the corresponding Òrìṣà may become spiritually relevant through prayer, divination, ewe, offerings, baths or other prescribed spiritual work. This is spiritual correspondence, not medical diagnosis, and traditions may differ by lineage. The more I study Yorùbá spirituality, the more I realize the Òrìṣà are not only stories about forces outside of us. They can also teach us how to understand the forces moving within us. 🌿✨ Source: Baba Ifa Karade, The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts Know Your Orí.
