It is a fact that Ukraine has lost its industrial region and a significant part of its population. But after 4 years of war against the world's second military superpower, there remains a free and independent country called Ukraine. We haven't stopped to consider what Russia has gained: a country of 17 million square kilometers, in exchange for 20% of Ukrainian territory, which amounts to an insignificant proportion of its own territory. It has also gained near-total isolation from international trade and finance, a loss of around 40% of its annual budget devoted to the war, not to mention the human cost borne by its population, nor the loss—as has happened throughout its history—of the economic future of the Russian people. It reminds me of Azaña's speech about the Spanish Civil War, when he said: "Whoever wins, Spain loses." In this case, whoever wins, Russia will lose. Regardless of who wins the war.

Excellent point about Odessa. If Russia can conquer that Ukraine will have no presence on the black sea, which is what Russia now has since they’ve been knocked out out of the black sea by a country with no Navy.
