So this is the part I told you about. This is where things changed. Bulus was giving Max commands, and Max was responding, but you could already see that something wasn’t quite right. Then Max suddenly changed his body language. And within seconds, it looked like he was about to go at Bulus. That moment honestly scared me. Because this wasn’t Max simply refusing a command anymore. This was a situation that could have escalated very quickly. And this is where people need to understand something about powerful dogs. Before a dog makes a serious move, there are often smaller signals. The stare. The stillness. The body becoming tense. The way the dog controls space. The change in facial expression. Those things matter. And because Max is a very powerful dog, I don’t take moments like this lightly. Now, I want to make something clear. I’m not saying Max suddenly decided he was the “alpha” and wanted to attack Bulus. That’s too simplistic. Dogs communicate through body language, and their reactions can be influenced by resources, pressure, boundaries and the relationship they have with each person. And food can make those interactions even more important because it’s a valuable resource. What really caught my attention was the difference between how Max responds to Bulus and how he responds to me. With me, the command is clear. If I say DOWN, he goes down and stays there until I release him. With Bulus, he goes down, then gets back up a few seconds later. And that is something we have to address. Because confidence around a powerful dog isn’t about shouting louder. It’s about clarity, consistency, timing, boundaries and knowing when a situation is becoming unsafe. I was angry at Max in that moment, especially because Bulus is someone who takes care of him. But getting emotional isn’t going to solve the problem. Understanding why it happened is what matters. This is why raising a powerful breed is much more than teaching SIT, DOWN and STAY. You have to understand the animal, its instincts and its body language. And you have to build a relationship where your communication actually means something to the dog. That moment today taught me something too. No matter how well you know your dog, never become so comfortable that you stop paying attention. Because sometimes, the smallest change in body language can tell you that something is about to happen. After what happened today, I think I’ll have to stop Bulus from handling Max’s routine alone for now. I’ll need to be present, especially during feeding, until I fully understand what triggered that reaction.
