Processing wild Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) blooms into traditional oil. This is a look at how we continue this Appalachian folk medicine tradition in our family, passing it down through the generations. 🌿 Historically, mountain healers valued these yellow flowers as a staple for the home apothecary. In regional folklore, the plant was known as "Hag’s Taper." Ancestors would dip the tall, dried stalks in wax or tallow to use as torches to shield the homestead. Speaking of torches, I’m actually harvesting stalks to make traditional Mullein torches next week, so hit follow so you don't miss that upcoming video! How we make the oil: The absolute most critical step in foraging mullein is letting the fresh blooms dry 100% until they are completely crispy. Fresh blossoms hold lots of moisture from morning dew. Just one trapped droplet of water will introduce mold, ruining the entire infusion. Once dry, they are packed in a clean glass jar, covered fully in an organic carrier oil, and covered. I line the lid with parchment paper but it’s not a must with oil infusion’s. Now it sits to infuse for six weeks before straining. Every plant has a rich history, but everyone's body is different.
