There's one tool that you'll often hear me wax lyrical about and praise endlessly. The funny thing is, it isn't even a tool you use directly with the clay itself, rather, it's something that allows you to "gather" more information about the pot you're throwing or trimming. It's a mirror, a simple, standing mirror. I've used one of these since my training days during my time on the intense DCCoI Ceramics Skills & Design Training Course and since then, it has become one of my favourite tools in my arsenal. It does so much. It increases comfort, accuracy and it allows you to see a perfect sideview of the pot you're throwing or trimming at all times with just a simple, quick glance upwards. I sometimes find that I’m throwing pots mostly looking through the glass and for things like making sure the profile of my mugs are correct, it’s unbelievably helpful. From above and without a mirror, your view is slightly skewed and you can’t properly observe the side of the vessel you’re making without leaning backwards awkwardly, or even getting off the wheel to check the silhouette. Yet, a mirror negates all of that and those quick, additional moments of observation into the making process itself, creating a more fluid and efficient workflow. And so, that’s what this weekend’s YouTube video is all about, (a link to which you can find via the Linktree in my profile’s biography). I want to take you through why I use a mirror, how I use a mirror, the advantages, the scant disadvantages and which model I use, although I should specify, this is NOT a sponsored video. The mirror itself, for those wondering, is the Ikea Ikornnes small standing mirror. I like its large frame, ease of adjustability, although it is prone to slipping over from time to time when slamming around larger mounds of clay.
