i love this rule, however as a kid we absolutely went back and forth between disney channel and nickelodeon or whatever lol but with the streaming apps being available i think this is a genius rule!

This is an excellent example of why a parenting philosophy is more important than individual rules. I’ve followed you long enough to see that this is really aligned with your general approach to your household. It would fly directly in the face of a lot of what makes my parenting philosophy cohesive.

BRB running to make this a rule for my 62yr old mother who refuses to use the guide, will watch 2 shows at the same time and flip 100 channels in between on a commerical break 😂😂😂😭

I love Samsung TV for this reason because it has scheduled breaks but they’re not ads. You have to tolerate a little boredom of a break.

I tell my nanny kid that if she wants to watch a show she has to watch the whole episode😅 it sounds like a punishment lol because she will fast forward or say it’s boring after 5 minutes.

I love this rule!!! I’m a BCBA and so many children get frustrated when they cannot find a random video they watched one time after so much clicking and switching! Like I don’t know how we got there either!

Added bonus: it teaches them, passively, the progression of a story from beginning, middle, end. I've encountered people who cannot tell a story progressively and I've long suspected this might be why. being able to coherent tell a story is sanity saving.

As kids we would switch at breaks or the end, I guess the problem now is that there are so many choices and they can pause things whenever they want so the rule makes sense. I’d also imagine it’s hella frustrating being in the room watching it change every few mins.

Yep!! My kid can't watch anything that's less than 24 minutes run time. I try to pick movies or hour shows as much as I can because she absolutely prefers 3 minutes of brain rot and switches!

Pro tip- we haven’t had a remote in probably 2 years. Me and hubby keep the Roku app on our phones and we only use those to control the tv

My kids only get iPads on airplanes and very long car rides. It’s locked down to only things downloaded to the device. But I also noticed them starting to jump around programs. At home, they don’t control the remote and have to agree on what to watch (and only on weekends or really bad weather days when felonies are being considered and I’m done).

I had this issue with Spotify. we have a second cell phone that I use as a baby monitor and to control Spotify on Alexa. my 3 year old picked up on how to use it and I found her changing songs every 30 seconds and it was driving me nuts. now she's now only allowed to pick a playlist.

Yes! I've started doing this with my four year old because I noticed she started to switch through videos without giving it a chance even. I think I'm gonna take it further like you did and ask her to look for something to do.

I intentionally have not taught my kids how to use a remote. They’re 5 and 3. They choose a show and can watch it. If they want to switch they have to ask me or my husband and we usually require that they finish the episode until they switch (unless they have a valid reason - sometimes my kids don’t want to watch something because it’s too scary and then I will switch).

Yes my daughter does this and implemented the same rule! At the beginning id have to physically hold it until she broke the habit. Now shell put it down and not immediately grab it to switch shows.

Yes! It really helps with their attention span. We do the same thing and it’s worked out well. We also stopped doing tv on school nights, it was just causing a lot of extra struggle with bedtimes and no tv has made bedtime much easier to manage
