@i.a.n.network: After a long 268 years of service, the Port-of-Spain Prison on Frederick Street is being decommissioned. Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander confirmed the move, saying the transfer of high-risk inmates to Golden Grove Prison, the first phase in the closure of the prison, has already been completed. Acting Commissioner of Prisons Elvin Scanterbury also confirmed the process and said that inmates, equipment, and other assets would be moved to other facilities incrementally. Alexander announced the plans to close the prison on September 4th, 2025. Former Prisons Commissioner Gerard Wilson said, “Port-of-Spain Prison has really outlived its usefulness… if you’re looking at rehabilitation and reformation it is not the ideal place.” The POS Prison previously housed more than 500 inmates, inclusive of over 300 remand prisoners. Thus far, 50 inmates have been moved to the Remand Prison at Golden Grove, Arouca. The process began on September 21st and is expected to be wrapped up by the end of November. Despite supporting the closure, Wilson acknowledged that the prison’s location near courts made inmate transportation between the court and the prison efficient and gave families easier access for visitation and suggests that the site be preserved as a museum to educate the public about the history of the country’s penal system.
