@thotline_news: 27th September 2026 - Just my opinion. This is first meaningful step I've ever seen in my lifetime towards actually making the NHS work #nhs #andyburnham #socialcare #primeminister #labourparty
Politics like this is the type of thing reform will struggle to argue against

the nhs isn't underfunded, its thrown to middle managers who guzzle away public funds.

The hospital beds can cost £800 per night, it would be cheaper for the hospital to pay for the patients care at home. If Health and Social Care were integrated it would pay for for itself by saving money on bed blocking.

funding is easy, just make the UK government the shareholder of all those water companies that are giving huge dividends out.

NHS staff have been screaming this for years. I don't care who does it. We need it sorted.

Tell me if I am wrong but would this also help reduce everyone's council tax bill because if I am remembering correctly 80-90% of council tax goes to social care and the majority goes to adult social care

Look.... he's talking more and more like someone I'd be proud to vote for.
Yeah I wanna see actions to prove all the big talk but as long as he follows up I'm all for this guy.

This is basically how we fund social care in Northern Ireland and also in Manchester, so it doesn't surprise me that Andy wants to expand it.

Makes sense.. spend more money with new care system but in long run cost comes down as the whole system is more efficient

I work in social services, specifically substance misuse. When I started over 3 years ago the team had 9 social workers and 3 social work assistants. There is now 5 social workers and 2 assistants.
Covering a whole county..

Traditionally, it’s been council funds (not central funds) that pay for social care and care for special needs children, etc. Recently, these demands have been growing, and eating budgets that could go to road resurfacing, maintenance, the police and other constituency-level needs. By introducing this centralised system, Burnham is also fixing so many other local issues.

This feels like one of those things that would cost a lot for the first few years, then more than pay for itself in the long run.

Him even trying to fix this is ten times better than the last like, 5 prime ministers, who all just decided it was too hard and didn’t try at all

I've worked in care for 6 years. I have cared for people from all walks of life, including a very famous actor and a famous illustrator..NO ONE is immune from needing care. It can and does happen to anyone and this is a very good thing.

its still early doors and I don't want to give too much credit before I see meaningful policy actions, but I will say compared to Starmer, the way Burnham talks about his vision of the country (i.e. rightly blaming Thatcherism for many of the biggest issues) and how his policies feel like they're part of a coherent, consistent framework, its night and day.

Delayed discharge is only scratching the surface - the NHS deals with many, many crises that could have been prevented by good social care. We have been choosing to meet people's needs expensively when they're urgent rather than doing so earlier and inexpensively in the community
