In another life ... Luffy ? #ONEPIECE #portgas #D #Ace #aceedit Ace didn't die because he was stupid. Ace didn't die just because Akainu provoked him. Ace didn't die because he had too much ego. Every time we talk about Marineford, there's always someone who says, "Yeah, but Ace just had to run; he turned around because of one insult." "He ruined Whitebeard's entire sacrifice." And I understand why people say that, but it's a far too simplistic interpretation of the character. Ace didn't turn around just because Akainu insulted Whitebeard; he turned around because his entire life was built around a problem. In fact, he doesn't know how to run away when someone he loves is behind him, and Oda already showed us that in his childhood. When Ace and Luffy were little, Ace already refused to run away from a much stronger opponent because Luffy was behind him. He can't even find the words to express himself properly; he only knows one thing. If he runs, then Luffy becomes the target. And it's exactly the same principle at Marineford. Luffy is exhausted, he has no strength left, he can't even stand at that moment. Luffy is no longer a fighter, he's a body moving by pure will. So when Akainu provokes Ace, yes, it hits Ace, there's no problem. But the real danger isn't the insult; the real danger is that Akainu is still there, and Luffy is right behind him. Ace understands the risk perfectly well. If he continues to run with Luffy in this state, Akainu can target Luffy directly. That's exactly what happens a few seconds later. Luffy falls, Akainu attacks, and Ace steps in front of him. So no, Ace didn't die because of one insult. Ace died because, at the most crucial moment... his body did what it always did: protect Luffy. Garp explains very well that Roger didn't run away simply because he was arrogant, but because Roger refused to let the enemy pursue his crew. If he fled with them, he would have put everyone in danger, so he turned back. Not out of stupidity, but out of responsibility, and Ace is the same. He's Roger's son, and even though he spends his life rejecting that blood, he inherited that reflex, that inability to turn his back when someone he loves is exposed, and that's what makes his death tragic because Ace never truly believed he deserved to live. From birth, he carried the world's hatred on his shoulders. He's the son of the Pirate King, and he grew up wondering if he even had the right to exist. And yet, despite all that pain, he becomes someone capable of loving to the point of dying for others. Even his encounter with Luffy's crew—everyone is surprised to see how polite, calm, and disrespectful Ace is. But it's not just good manners; Ace learned to behave that way so he could properly thank Shanks for saving Luffy that day. Even his way of speaking is linked to his little brother. Luffy is at the center of a large part of his development, so when Marineford arrives, Ace doesn't just die as Luffy's brother; he dies as someone who, for once, received proof that he was loved. Whitebeard came for him, his crew fought for him, Luffy went through hell for him, and just before leaving, if I don't say "I regret it," he says "thank you," "Thank you for loving me." That's the heart of the character. So yes, strategically he could have run, but narratively Ace couldn't because Ace isn't written as a man who abandons his brother. Ace is written as a man who spends his whole life wondering if he deserved to exist, and who finds his answer by giving his life to protect the one who loved him unconditionally. He's not some idiot who died for ragebait. He's a man who died for his little brother.
